Would love to keep it with my Angel/Buffy disks that I have watched to many times to count. Buffy is my favorite series ever on TV and I loved season 6, heck I have had a relationship that was so bad but I kept going back. Buffy has every human emotion in the series. Also not a Connor fan.elainecleohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09926775936167205826noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6561869413186077787.post-37401593136586394022009-12-01T12:28:39.263-05:002009-12-01T12:28:39.263-05:00I'm happy that you are such a fan of Darla too...I'm happy that you are such a fan of Darla too, Tara. Woo hoo! Yeah, I didn't really think through my Buffy season 6 comparison ... since I watched Buffy first, I often just think of it as happening first. Yeah, I think those writers really had some continuous themes going.

Regardless, there really are a lot of parallels between the Angel/ Darla relationship and the Buffy/ Spike one. In some ways Spike did give Buffy an epiphany, as she really started to mature and shape up following her break-up with Spike in "As You Were." Unfortunately, all forward momentum then was backtracked by Xander leaving Anya at the altar, and then the Trio convincing her that she had killed an innocent girl, etc. But for a moment there, she was on the path towards getting back her life...

I actually noticed a lot of lines throughout Angel that echo sentiments in Buffy and even Firefly (which I watched even before Buffy), very clearly. There were a couple points where my sisters and I pointed out, "oh, that sounds just like on Firefly!" Of course, Angel is only echoing these other shows for us, because we watched it last, when really it often came first. ;) I think there is even the use of the term shiny at some point early on. Matter of fact, when we interviewed Miracle Laurie we asked her who in the Whedonverse she'd like to play besides the role she is playing as Mellie/November. She said Spike but when Bitsy and I got back from that interview we had the discussion 'tween ourselves. If we were actors, who would we like to play? After a long thought I said "Darla". Something about the meat of the story line. In my opinion, she has the best overall character development and arc of them all. (note: I also said Mal but that's a whole other conversation.)

Interesting that you pointed out that Angel "took a page out of Buffy season 6" with his sex scene with Darla...even though it happen prior to that. I never thought of it that way! The writers really must have had an itch to scratch when they did finally roll around to season 6. And I guess they couldn't have the Spuffy relationship go the same route, but I think it would've made more sense. If Buffy had said to him, "I just want to fee-eel" and then realize after that she, like Angel, had finally had her epiphany that she wanted to live...well that might have spared us some of the grief of season 6. My opinion, of course.

But I digress, Darla is the shit. So unapologetically evil (whether alive, dead, and undead) and in the most fabulous way possible. ..truly an empowered female character in the Whedonverse. I know a lot of people prefer Dru to her (and Dru does bring the crazy-fun) but I don't think she holds a candle to Darla in the sense of deep, rich characters. Dru didn't even get an ending of any kind, which is a shame but definitely another digression.

Wonder how Darla fared in the September Silliness Character Tournament?Tarahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04234869195720609070noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6561869413186077787.post-68033094890398861292009-11-30T21:18:14.037-05:002009-11-30T21:18:14.037-05:00Ruthie,I totally agree about keeping the pregnanci...Ruthie,I totally agree about keeping the pregnancies to a minimum. I almost wanted to stop watching the show after that awful episode where Cordy got pregnant in season 1. And then there were TWO more supernatural pregnancies. Ugh! But at least Darla's afforded an awesome death scene, right?

Michelle, yeah I don't think it was really Darla. I think you're right that she's probably burning in hell, but TPTB copied her or something. There's some reference in the dialogue where Connor says that she's not his mother, and she concedes but says she has all her memories and everything, so really it's the same. Whatever, this is the kind of thing that leads to drinking, so I understand your feelings. I just felt I couldn't pass up talking about her dying for a fifth time, and getting in a dig at Connor. ;)heroine_tvhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08510322460194758857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6561869413186077787.post-30696292519856189272009-11-30T21:16:11.805-05:002009-11-30T21:16:11.805-05:00Nice summary! I'm currently rewatching Angel S3 and have just gotten to the birth of one of my most hated characters - emo, love me daddy Connor. ugh. hate him. Love Darla though:)Michaelnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6561869413186077787.post-11728676653348990742009-11-30T20:40:10.101-05:002009-11-30T20:40:10.101-05:00I love this! I just don't understand why she would not be in Hell after she stakes herself. Did giving birth to Conner give her that much redemption? it never sat right with me.

Either way, that minor blip doesn't stop me from loving her character.Michellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17069501596442426959noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6561869413186077787.post-72348312832788810552009-11-30T20:13:28.628-05:002009-11-30T20:13:28.628-05:00I did like Darla, and you did a great summary.
