Halfway done with Round 1 and 32 "Shocking Moments" have already been knocked out in this year's March Madness! If you're just joining us, this year we're attempting to figure out: What is the most dramatically shocking "Joss!" moment of the Whedonverse? Here's a recap of the last round:
1. That little shit Connor sent his dad straight to the bottom of the sea (a storyline much echoed in this season's premiere of Being Human) but that wasn't any match for the late, great Glenn Quinn and Doyle's swan song. Winner: Doyle's Sacrifice
2. Angel trying to suffocate Wes in the hospital was one of the craziest things of a pretty crazy season, so it's not surprising that it beat Lilah beheading Linwood Murrow in W&H's offices. Winner: Angel Pillow-smothers Wes
3. Apparently, Angel having sex with Darla (even though he had a pretty major no-sex clause at the time) was shocking to absolutely no one, but Anya's death was! Winner: Anya gets chopped in half!
4. And just to give Anya a one-two punch, Xander leaving her ass at the alter was more Joss! than Connor returning from Quar'Toth as "The Destroyer" Winner: Poor Anya get's ditched
5. To quote tweep @thesadeianwoman "dude, if river's assassin skills reveal had been up against most other options I would've picked her. But The eye trumps!" Winner: Xander loses an eye!
6. In what might just be the lamest battle of this tournament: Cordy becoming a (faux) higher being was only slightly more Joss! than Buffy's robotic pregnancy in the comics. Winner: Cordy ascends!
7. Mal kicking Crow through the engine is a fan-favorite moment on Firefly but it was no match for Buffy's first death. Winner: Buffy dies in Prophecy Girl
8. This last one was a body slicing theme: Mal's ear vs. Wes's throat. Probably due to the excessive whoa! factor in that storyline, Wes won the battle. Winner: Justine slices Wes's throat!
Obviously there are **Major Spoilers** ahead in this tourney. If you're not familiar with all things Whedon, tread lightly or avoid.
Here is the Region 1c Battle, taking place at the Stark Tower Complex in NYC....
This might have the record for the most decisive (Tara's death vs. Drusilla re-sires Darla), and the most indecisive (Buffy stabs Faith vs. Darla stakes herself)
ReplyDeleteAs of this moment, Penny's death and Bennet's death are literally at 50/50 so I'd say that's more indecisive.
ReplyDeleteHulk smashing the crap out of Loki gets my vote! I don't know why it isn't considered here lol
ReplyDeleteI remember being COMPLETELY unspoiled about Buffy getting a sister. I remember sitting in my living room going "Wait, what?" and I doubted myself for several minutes. "Did I miss an episode? Did Dawn show up in an episode I missed?" So funny.
ReplyDeleteHardest in this round for me:
Andrew Murders Jonathan vs. Willow Flays Warren.
Easiest for me:
Tara's death vs. Dru's resiring Darla.
Re: hamstap - Yes Tara's death was quite the landslide! Wash's was too....it was 100% for quite a while but with almost 600 votes it went down to 95%.
ReplyDeleteand yes, Madhatter - Penny vs Bennet's death is pretty close here too! so close that I still can't prep the next post. Will have to wait until Midnight!
Re: Sierra - that is a FANTASTIC moment in The Avengers, it just didnt' make the cut. In fact, we have over a dozen moments that ended up being nudged out of the nominees. Perhaps we'll note them at the end as "honorable mentions".
Re: Kaaren - B vs D is actually the first episode I ever watched of Buffy in real time. So I'm totally with you! I said to my brother (who got me into the show the previous summer, watching recorded eps on VHS tapes) "How come you didn't tell me she had a sister?" He was like "wait HUH??" Ha! Weird times.
