fanvid sunday

Holy already nighttime! I've had a bit of a beer bad kind of weekend so my apologies on not providing a glorious fanvid sunday sooner but, hey, better late than never, right? So, anyway, I've had Hannigan on the brain ever since being reminded of that hilarious video the Onion posted about how nudity is okay on network television, so long as it's Hannigan who is the one doing the nuding. Nuding? Yeah, I'll leave it. You can see that video here:

FCC Okays Nudity On TV If It’s Alyson Hannigan

But, in addition, please also enjoy this mashup of videos from Buffy and HIMYM created by Laerrry set to Garbage's "When I Grow Up".

Happy Sunday, Buffyfesters!

Perez reports the Whedon news, wackiness ensues

Perez Hilton speculated (or tried to anyway) the other day about Joss's Statement to Ausiello regarding the Whedonless Buffy Movie. This is not new news to us at this point, but I still chuckled upon reading. The post is filled with misinformation (Tv Guide? Entertainment Weekly? Huh?) But the very best thing about Perez's site is the ridiculous comments. His readers are something else. I'm not sure half even read the post. Check out this sampling then click through to his site for the full shebang:

dickbreath says: I WANT MY MONEY BACK!!! I WOULD RATHER WATCH BIKINI GIRLS WITH MACHINE GUNS!!!
cherrymuffinlove says: – Re: dickbreath – how inspirational.
Nici says: …Kristy Swanson IS Buffy the Vampire Slayer…f**k SMG BRING BACK KRISTY!!
EwithawYe says: You can't have Buffy without Sarah Michelle Geller!!! It's like having a white Fat Albert

500!

SMG as she reads our 500th blog post.

Happy 500th post birthday, Buffyfest! 500 is pretty shocking. Michelle, Bitsy and I certainly didn't know what we were in for when we this humbly began. We just loved talking the Whedonverse, that was all it was. But now, 500 posts later - I can't even remember what we did before this blog. It's a part of us now. Here's to 500 more!

Thanks to everyone who listens to our ranting and laughs/cries with us when the news hits.

Last Night's Sunnydale HS Reunion (Pt. 1 - Back to High School Edition)

The Sunnydale HS Reunion last night at the JCC in NYC was a good, late 90's time! Met a lot of great Whedonverse fans. Don't want to give too many details away as there is still another event next week, but there was definitely a cool surprise or 2!

Upon arrival, you received a randomized Sunnydale Alum name and that was your name tag for the evening (photo at right). This came in to play later on during Trivia and stuff. There was trivia all night long and at the end the winning team received a box of stuff to hold a Buffy Sing-Along enough for 70 people! Also included in that prize box was a bunch of Whedonverse books and other loot. Fun!

Don't forget the "Bronze Edition" at Galapagos in DUMBO will be next Wednesday, June 4th. Have a feeling that event will be a lot crazier, since not only will there be booze involved, but it got a full page write up in this week's Time Out New York! Check that out here and here. If you want to attend, it might be best to reserve tix just in case. Go here for the full scoop on that.

See below for some more pics from last night:
Buffyfest in the house!

A "Buffy" hangs with the evil.

Clinton reading trivia questions with this little kid dancing beside him. There was a whole awesome Buffy loving Family there! What a cool household to grow up in.

Summer Glau to be on Dollhouse?

Ausiello reporting:

Ausiello:
The noise you're about to hear is the sound of the Whedonverse exploding. Joss confirms to me exclusively that, well, he's one step head of you. "If anybody thinks [bringing Summer onto Dollhouse] hasn't occurred to me already then they have not met me," he says. "I mentioned it to her before [SCC] was canceled. I was like, 'You know, we should get you in the 'house.' But first we have to come up with something that works." And casting her as a doll would not work, insists Whedon. "Summer would be perfect to play an active, but she's done that [type of role] a lot," he says. "I'd rather see her play someone who talks too much. The most fun I have is when I get somebody who's good and comfortable at doing something, and then I make them do something else. Summer said to me, 'I would like to play a normal girl before I die of extreme old age.'"

Joss speaks to Ausiello about 'Buffy' Reboot Movie

And what was Mr. Whedon's official statement?:
" I hope it's cool."

Hmm.

Can Stop the Signal - No Buffy Movie

As most of you are aware, the Kuzui's are considering rebooting Buffy as a film franchise without the involvement of any of the television cast or Joss Whedon himself. Our collective first reaction at Buffyfest was to assume that this, like past rumors, were baseless and false. Since this news comes to us from the Hollywood Reporter, however, we have to take it a little more seriously. We've spent so much time trying to save shows and trying to get movies made I wonder how it is that we can do the opposite? Do we rally in protest or do we all play apathetic? I think I can speak for almost everyone on earth, it's orbital moon, the rest of the universe, and all possible parallel worlds that a Buffy movie without Joss should never ever happen.

So what do you say, kids, how do we derail this sucker?

Update - now with more petition-ey goodness. Go here to sign, if you care.:

Sunnydale in 2009

My mom is so cute, she recently finished the Buffy series dvds and while in LA for a trip, decided to take a quick tour of Sunnydale (aka Torrance, CA in real life). These are her pics from last week! Ah, I remember (back when I was still a fairly new viewer) the first time I was in LA after the series ended, I did the Sunnydale trip too. You just can't resist!

Buffy's house and Sunnydale high are both holding up quite nicely, doncha think? They are using Torrance high for the New 90210 show (just like the old Beverly Hills 90210 of yore.)

So if you're in the SoCal area and would like to visit these (and other) Buffy/Angel locations, here are the addresses:

Buffy's House (remember, people are living there.)
1313 Cota Drive
Torrance, CA
Map

Sunnydale High
200 W. Carson Street
Torrance, CA

Angel's Hyperion Hotel
4121 Wilshire Blvd

Discuss - Angel #21

I almost forgot to mention that Kelley Armstrong's penultimate issue of Angel: Aftermath came out this week. I picked it up yesterday and I'm still really enjoying it. It's been nice having Angel Inc. back in play and feeling like something will actually be resolved each issue while still moving the over reaching arc forward. I hope that, after the Gunn/Illyria and Drusilla arcs are done we'll see more from Angel's new time. I'm preemptively shipping a relationship between Dez and Gunn. I mean we already know Gunn has a thing for the big cats, right?

What did you think of this issue? How do you think Kelley's going to wrap this thing up?

Penny, the Vampire Slayer

Fabulous friend of Buffyfest Jen dressed her baby girl, appropriately named Penny, in one of our organic onesies! So cute!! I'm getting the feeling that this pic may become our version of Boing Boing's "Unicorn Chaser". Hee!

Uninitiated: Watching Buffy the First Time

There are few things in this world that make me as happy as introducing someone to Buffy. We Buffyfesters have each done it to many someones in our lives but, on this occasion, I've decided to do things a bit differently. I recently sat down with a group all of whom, despite being colossal nerds, have never ridden the joy train that is Buffy (that came out dirtier than I'd intended). Realizing that Buffy Season One is a tad dated i thought it was important to remind them of the world that was back when the Slayer first hit our screens. Find the introduction I gave and a few first impressions after zee bump.

We're going to take a little trip, you and I, back in time to the tenth of March, 1997. Just think of me as the Doctor, H.G. Wells, Marty Mcfly, Bill S. Preston Esquire and Ted Theodore Logan all wrapped together in a shiny bow. Phone Box, Time Machine, DeLorean, or... you know... phone box again (GEORGE CARLIN in a phone box) what have you; time, traveling, backwards; come on, it'll be fun!

So, a little background. It's 1997. William Jefferson Clinton has just begun his second term as president and people are listening to Hanson sing MMMBop unironically. In fact the whole "doing things ironically" movement isn't even so much as a glint in an emo kid's eye because the word "emo" doesn't exist. It's the year Kate Winslet declared "I'll never let go, Jack. I'll never let go." and then promptly let go thus causing stereotypical women everywhere to cry into their popcorn whilst their equally stereotypical boyfriends were thinking back to the nude scene and wishing like hell this damned movie would end already.

Cell phones are like the bat phone: for emergency use only. Most of us are just getting this thing called the internet at a whopping 28kbps through AOL (or, dare I say it, Compuserve) so that we can look at porn for free and pretend to be lesbians in chat rooms. That last part may just be me.

Some people die. On the same day we nerds are mourning the passing of the great Terry Nation, the rest of the world is set ablaze at the murder of Christopher George Latore Wallace (better known as Biggie Smalls aka The Notorious B.I.G).

Having been terrified by a photocopied sheep, federal funding is officially outlawed for research on any human cloning. Meanwhile a bunch of cultists castrate themselves and commit mass suicide because they think their ticket to heaven is on a comet for some reason.

Tony Blair is appointed prime minister which is as baffling as the whole castration/comet thing and Deep Blue beats the greatest human chess player reminding us, once again, that robots are totally going to overthrow us. Any day now... just you wait! Steve Jobs makes his triumphant return to a little company you may have heard of called Apple which was doing so badly that Microsoft had to buy $150 million worth of shares in it just to prevent themselves from becoming a monopoly. Princess Di passes away making us forget about the whole gang wars thing and remember how much the paparazzi kind of suck. The Marlins beats the Indians and nobody cares because neither of those teams are the Yankees. There's a worldwide stock market crash (imagine that)!

But more important than all those things is the transmission of the first episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

In our first sitting we ripped right through the first disc which, as a reminder, includes: "Welcome to the Hellmouth", "The Harvest", "The Witch", and "Teacher's Pet". For a first season that is often maligned as cheesy and uninspired, I was delighted to discover that these new fans took to the show like a newly sired vampire takes to multiple fighting techniques. On top of the intentional humor, they all had a good hearty laugh at how it was we were meant to believe Charisma Carpenter could ever pass for a high school student. Their favorite character by an overwhelming majority vote was Willow and there were some lewd comments about Buffy's breasts that will go unmentioned in this recap.

All in all, it was a surprisingly positive experience that will be repeated once monthly. Next time I hope to record their responses and edit it together in the most unintentionally hilarious way possible. Stay tuned...

The Sarah Connor Chronicles Has Been Terminated

As most of you already know, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles has not been renewed for another season. Josh Friedman wrote a great closing letter to fans that you can read here. It was a thoughtful letter, but my grief still sits there like Poe's Raven, mockingly saying his stupid "Nevermore's" over and over again. So, here are my thoughts as I walk through the TV-induced 5 stages of grief:

1. Denial: I just don't think it's possible for such a quality show to be canceled. Isn't artistic integrity more important that money? And what about those DVR #'s? They were impressive for a Friday night, right? Right?!

2. Anger: The original post I had written yesterday would have reflected my anger pretty well, but it would have also sent lots of hateful comments floating my way. Let's just say I was uncharacteristically pissed off.

3. Bargaining: It's possible they could still put out a straight to DVD Season 3, right? Right?!

4. Depression: I can't believe it's not coming back. I'll never watch TV again.

5. Acceptance: I'm not here yet. Probably next Fall when I go to look at my DVR menu, I'll come across the name Sarah Connor Chronicles and finally realize the truth. Then, I'll put my finger to the remote and....delete program.

Epitaph One NOT going to air, after all...maybe.

I dunno, we're getting multiple reports and twitter is all abuzz with speculation. Moving on.

"Epitaph One" to air on Fox after all

This info comes from Gossi via Twitter.

In other news, it looks as though T:SCC is officially canceled. Ausiello just updated his Fall TV Cheat Sheet. To this I say boo. Bitsy says "That really chaps my ass."

Chuck has been renewed but with massive changes/cuts.

fanvid Sunday: T:TSCC Edition

It's no secret that we here at Buffyfest are huge fans of Sarah Connor Chronicles. While we've been happy to see Joss, Eliza, and Nathan all get the pickup for another season of fun, our hearts have been breaking for Summer Glau and crew who turned out killer performances week after week. With that in mind we present this special fanvid Sunday created by allii6 in celebration of Terminator in all it's glory.

What are your favorite TSCC moments? I really hope a miracle happens and it gets a third season. Happy Sunday, everybody.

Tara's note: In response to that I'm adding this (thanks DarthAngelus for the link!) Hey look at me! I'm on Fanvid Sunday!:

Can't Stop the Serenity - Support Equality Now

We're proud to announce our sponsorship of Can't Stop the Serenity which supports Equality Now through their fabulous Browncoat events around the world. The events give those fans a chance to see the “Big Damn Movie” on the big screen, while helping to protect human rights of women around the world.

This year, many cities are also showing Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog in addition to the usual Serenity screenings at their events. Click here to see what's happening in your neck of the woods, and if tickets are available yet. The website is updated daily with registered cities and their status...but if there isn't an event in your city, you could always host your own - no matter how small!

What we've donated is a Dollhouse poster signed by the man himself, Joss Whedon, at the Apple store event in Soho, NYC. This was the one where he and Eliza recorded a podcast just prior to Dollhouse's premier, which you can hear at itunes. We're also very excited to be attending and donating to our local NYC Browncoats' CSTS event. We'll give more details about that shortly. In the mean time, watch this for some inspiration.

Happy Birthday Angel!

Happy 40th Birthday to David Boreanaz! Is this guy getting more beautiful with age or what?

Dollhouse Death Watch - We have a winner!!!

I'm still pretty stunned about this Dollhouse renewal business.  The death watch is finally over and I can stop making these tedious graphs! Of course as you know by now, Dollhouse received a 13 episode order from Fox which makes Michelle's starry-eyed, totally unrealistic, optimist group the winner! I can admit when I was wrong, and I sure was! I'm not sure Bitsy will be hanging with me in the humble department, but he lost weeks ago anyway so whatever.

(To be fair, during our podcast, the truth was revealed about who had become the true optimist and who checked their positivity about the show at the 2nd episode's door. That tidbit is about a quarter way through.)

The optimists winning makes us all winners a bit, no matter how anti-Dollhouse you really are. Having Joss Whedon get a season 2 on television has ALWAYS been a good thing. The creators will surely take into consideration all the complaints and cringing and focus on all the good feedback about the show. Joss posted on Whedonesque last night and promised some terribleness too, so that's promising.

I'm excited about season 2 and am really looking forward to what's in store. I still say mash Dollhouse with the Buffyverse! Think of the possibilities...souls and imprints and slayers oh my!

Dollhouse Renewed

Somehow, against all odds, Dollhouse will return for a second season with another thirteen episode order. Before most of you rejoice and do your little snoopy dances to the theme song of Perfect Strangers would you mind if I asked you a question?

Why? Why is this the show that gets another chance? Why not Firefly? Why, despite it having the highest ratings of it's entire run, did Angel get canceled in it's fifth season? The ratings for Dollhouse went down, down, down dwindling week after week and completely bottomed in it's season finale and yet, here we are, all but officially guaranteed a year two. Even if you're overjoyed doesn't that seem, I dunno, strange to you? Little odd? Anyone? Bueller?

Alright. Rant over. So! What do you think will happen next? Where do you see a second season taking our theoretically intrepid (anti) heroes? In what ways will Echo continue to change? Will any of the other dolls exhibit similar behavior? Do you realize that none of the main characters officially died this year? That's practically unheard of on a Joss show! Will there be double or triple death in year two to make up for it? Who will live, who will die? The steering wheel is in your hands, where you gonna take me?

UPDATE: Castle has also been renewed. Sure, it's a bit of a derivative procedural but Fillion is fantastic in it as are his daughter and mother. So hurray to this news as well! Looks like it's a victory for two out of three Whedonversers. I don't suppose I could wrangle a third season out of a certain show starring a ballerina/robotic death machine, hmmmm?

You may resume your Snoopy Dance. Here, I'll even help.

Enjoy!

Doctor Horrible hosts Tony's!

In a move that will please both lovers of spontaneously choreographed dance numbers and the interwebs (I suspect there's a cross section here), Neil Patrick Harris has been selected to host this year's Tony Awards on Sunday June 7th. While I'm sure NPH was selected for his past work in musical theater as well as his charismatic presence on "How I Met Your Mother", I can't help but feel like it was Dr. Horrible and his delightfully disturbed sing-along blog that really sold the American Theater on him. Will Joss's masterwork get a name drop? How singy and dancey will NPH get? Will I actually watch the Tony Awards????

Yes. Yes, I will.

Fans fight over who really crashed the Fox phone line!

The most hilarious thing about this is how the T:SCC fans and the Dollhouse fans are fighting about who crashed the Fox line better. This was all after Miracle Laurie tweeted the phone number to the world.  Unity people, sheesh! Our people are on both shows!

Hee! Love it.

Dollhouse is done.

A series ratings low for the finale "Omega" is a certain cancellation for Dollhouse. TV By the numbers and The Hollywood reporter is reporting. Really makes you wonder, why couldn't we save Dollhouse?

This brings us to the final installment of the betting phase of the Dollhouse Death Watch (as the next one, whenever we get final word if it's canceled or not, will just be the finish.) So, all season long we have had a little bet going on over here at Buffyfest. As much as we love Whedon with all our hearts, some of us were skeptical, sarcastic, or just plain scared when it came to the fate of Dollhouse. So we wagered a little something and while readers tacked on our standings, we added your names to the chart, you know...for the fun.

Here are those results:

Do you think still Dollhouse will make it to season 2? Leave us a comment and let us know which group you belong:

Tara's Group (the bitter realists) - thinks Dollhouse will not make it to season 2.

Michelle's Group (the starry-eyed optimists) - who believes that Dollhouse get renewed for a second season.

Edited to add: I really cannot believe no one died in this show and so no one wins the poll that's on the right sidebar. Obviously most people thought it would be Dominic as he won with 34% (353 out of 1027 votes)...and he did get sent to the attic, but no classic Joss death. He probably doesn't want to play it out. Ok, I'm going to take the poll down now.

For the record, I voted for Dr. Saunders just b/c I was spoiled for Amy Acker being on only 6 or 7 eps, but nope! Didn't happen. Although she did come in 2nd in the poll with 27% of the votes (282) so clearly many were thinking the same.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is so down to earth, she'll even wait on your table.

The Daily News is reporting:
"While dining at the Charles with two gal pals, the pint-size pregnant actress didn't bother a waiter for a refill on her water — she got the pitcher herself. One male patron nearby held up his empty glass. "Ladies first!" Gellar quipped, serving her friends before going to his table."

Fun!

Happy Birthday Bitsy!

Happy Birthday you Sonoma-Bits, you!

"The Chronicles of Humanity" Machimina series featuring Felicia Day

The Chronicles of Humanity is an original science fiction series that's animated using a technique called Machinima. What's Machinima you say? It's created by using graphic engines from video games! Hooray! Specifically, in this case, The Sims 2 and Nexus: The Jupiter Incident. With the footage from those games and a very talented group of voice actors, including fan favorite Miss Felicia Day, the series was made possible. We spoke with the series creator Damien Valentine about the project and working with Felicia. See that interview below, but first: the trailer.

Buffyfest: Can you tell us a little bit about The Chronicles of Humanity? What's it about?

Damien Valentine: The Chronicles of Humanity is an original science fiction animated web series, set in the 24th century. The idea is we're only just starting to get out into space and colonize new worlds. There has never really been any conflict, which is why the whole situation on Titan is dealt with so badly in the first episode. This first season really deals with the aftermath of that, which we'll be seeing from the perspective of three sets of characters. The story itself is planned out over a three season arc, although I can't really talk about the other two just yet, I don't want to give anything away.

B: We understand you approached Felicia Day to be appear pre-Dr. Horrible. Great timing!

DV: It was perfect timing and she was great to work with. The recording session was handled online between Felicia, Elizabeth (playing the part of Katherine) and myself. She was professional but also friendly, so we all enjoyed ourselves. Between takes the three of us chatted about all sorts of things, from The Guild to Star Wars and video games.

From that session and subsequent discussions, I've picked up quite a lot about producing video for the web, hopefully that shows up in the series.

She's in four of the ten episodes. The first one already released and the other three are later on in the season.

B: How was working with her?

DV: It's a great pleasure to have her involved and I hope she'll be back for the second season.

B: This is your first original Sci fi series (after working on quite a few Star Wars films.) Any plans for a Whedonverse one?

DV: The first time I tried this sort of animation, Angel had just ended so I tried my hand and a story with vampires and slayers called Consanguinity. It came about after talking to some online friends and wondering what it would be like if we were vampires. What can I say? Joss brings out the real geek in me. I may revisit those characters someday, if I can think up a good story for them.

New episodes of The Chronicles of Humanity are released every Tuesday (that's today!) and can be found on the site: http://www.chroniclesofhumanity.com/

For those people curious about Consanguinity, that's available in the videos section here: http://www.bathtub-productions.com/

And tweeps, you can also follow Damien on Twitter

Special thanks to The Jedi for the tip!

Fanvid Sunday

What do you mean Sunday is almost over? Holy spaz attack! Time to hook up another vid of the fan variety. Micheal LB92 has consistently been my go to for some of the best editing and song selection out there and, once again, he really delivers with this fast paced Dollhouse video.

Happy Sunday everyone and don't forget to hook it up Hulu style and watch and rewatch Briar Rose till your eyeballs fall out.

Dollhouse Death Watch for ep 11 "Briar Rose"

Well, last night's episode of Dollhouse entitled "Briar Rose" was obviously outstanding. Poor Victor! That was hard core. Enver Gjokaj as Victor is super-duper talented (Ryan calls him fake Delouise..ha!) His acting in the "Victor's been imprinted with Dominic" scene was fantastic. But it was Alan Tudyk that stole the gorram show and having been spoiled that he was Alpha really didn't ruin it at all. This Mickey and Mallory thing they have cooked up for next week looks intriguing. If we could just get that last episode....

Which brings me to: I guess Fox has decided that next week's up is truly the finale, no changing their minds. In saying that, the jig is definitely up when it comes to "Finale Gate". I didn't realize the Minear wrote/directed ep 12 and the Whedon clan wrote 13 w Joss directing. I'm sorry but that is super telling. That mixed with the Felicia Day announcement at the Apple store has completely closed this case for me.

Last night's ratings? They were a little better and a little worse at the same time. Probably anything other than "amazingly better" won't help at this point. Hitfix.com says:

"While the Joss Whedon's drama's overall viewership was up slightly to an estimated 3.09 million (it fell just below 3 million last week), the rating in the 18-49 demo was down to a 1.1 and other young demos were also down. "Dollhouse," which has its season finale next Friday, at least beat The CW's "America's Next Top Model" repeat."

So, moving on to the Death Watch. 1 week to go but I guess we really won't have an answer to this until May 18th, when Fox will make announcements. So we'll keep the Death Watch open, but what in the shire is up with that poll on the right? Why has someone not died on Dollhouse yet? Perhaps Whedon feels he's becoming predictable after Penny's death in Dr. H, so maybe he feels a bigger shocker would be not to kill anyone at all!

Do you think Dollhouse will make it to season 2? Leave us a comment and let us know which group you belong:

Tara's Group (the bitter realists) - thinks Dollhouse will not make it to season 2.

Michelle's Group (the starry-eyed optimists) - who still believe that Dollhouse get renewed for a second season.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Has Been Saved by E!

If Only E! had some pull over at Fox then maybe this would matter more. Still, it's great to see Terminator get the response it deserves by winning 53% of the vote. Chuck came in 2nd with 25% and, surprisingly, Dollhouse didn't fare so well with only 10% of the vote.

Make sure you read the interview with the show's producer Josh Friedman. He hasn't heard anything from Fox yet, but he still hasn't given up hope: "They're all people, too, and they hear what goes on [with stuff like Save One Show]. I don't think it's a futile effort at all for people to continue to fight for the show."
