Our own March Madness end of Round 2 - The Whedonverse Character Tournament

Welcome to the "March Madness" tourney - Whedon style! Wowzers, that last part was really something else as the tourney had an influx of voters coming in from linking sites (Whedonesque and SlayAlive, among others). It certainly put the "Madness" in "March Madness"! So if you just joined us last round, thanks for participating! If you're here for the first time now, here's a bit of backstory: This been designed to find the best/fan-favorite character of the entire Whedonverse (Buffy, Angel, Firefly and Dr. Horrible). We mentioned this previously, but again Dollhouse has been omitted mostly due to newness and also, the Dollhouse Death Watch. Anyway, don't blame us if the choices below are crazy, they were random at first but now are the result of your picks. Now it's just the "best of the best".

Round 2 had a few surprises. For one, Xander had the most votes beating Gunn the worst of anyone! Most of the battles were clear winners. One exception to that was Oz vs. River which was flip-flopping for 3 days! River was the sure winner at one point, but Oz pulled ahead this evening beating her 95-81. March Madness - The Whedonverse Alternate Universe Tournament!

IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN! Ahh March...Spring is about to poke it's flowery head up from the ground like a newly sired vampire's arm, Basketball fans are all up in arms about something I don't quite understand and on Buffyfest it's all about forcing certain Whedonverse things to battle against one another to the death! That's right, it's March Madness!

We've done a lot of these tournaments now, so it's getting kind of hard for us to think up new topics, but there's one thing that us Whedonites know about all too well and that's "What could have been?" We've had our hearts smashed from so many broken promises. Burning questions like: What if Firefly had been renewed? What if Joss Whedon had been able to make the original Buffy movie the way he wanted to? And the question that ultimately enters any Whedon conversation: What about Spike?

So this March Madness is going to be all about the magical Alternate Universe where those cancelled, ruined or never-realized-projects will get the chance to shine. Which one would you want to see most? This one might be a little tricky to wrap your head around since it's all make-believe unicorns and leprechauns. It's not as easy as say, who has the most World Ending Hair (Teeny bangs anyone?)...but I think it'll be interesting to see which unrealized project wins this thing. I can't even decide a favorite right now! It's anyone's game. Oh and please don't ask why Spike is pitted against Angel again...it's totally randomized and for some reason these Tourneys like to eff with me.

It's going to be short as we're already down to the Elite Eight, but to complicate things a bit we're going to go with what's called a "Double Elimination" bracket for the first time in Buffyfest Tournament history. Why you ask? Mostly to make my life difficult, but also our resident advisor The Maestro said it will be a more accurate final battle and if your favorite gets eliminated early on, they'll get a second chance. Ok then!

This first round will have 4 matches and will end on Monday night at 11:59 pm EST.

The Elite Eigh! MARCH MADNESS 2013: "Most Shocking Moment" of the Whedonverse Tourney

OK, March is winding down and so are we. With only 8 "most shocking" moments to go, this March Madness is getting crazy and a little too sad! Whose idea was this again?

Here's a recap of the last round:

1. Angelus killed Jenny, Twangel killed Giles. Guy sure knows how to crack necks (and break doors)! Winner: Jenny Calendar's neck snaps right into the Elite Eight!

2. The only moment to give Wash's death a run for it's money so far is this one: Lorne shooting Lindsay MacDonald dead against his will in the series finale. Still, the gasp in the theater rings in our ears to this day. Winner: Wash's gets impaled by a Reaver spear!

3. Doyle's death vs Anya's death. Both were demons (though one was decidedly more evil), both fought bravely in battle (though one was definitely more fearless and heroic), both were background characters (yet one should've been offed years ago). Yeah not quite sure what happened here. Winner: Anya gets sliced in half!

4. More bodily harm here as we have Xander's eye vs. Wes getting his throat sliced in the madness of Angel Season 3. THE EYE PREVAILS! Winner: Xander's eye can't be stopped!

5. Dawn's crazy-random introduction to the series vs. Warren's flaying was a suuuuper tight fight! Winning the battle by a very slim margin (163 votes to 169 votes!) -  Winner: The Black Eyes of "Shut up" Willow!

6. Buffy was hardcore when she stabbed Faith with the intention of feeding Angel her slayer blood! But that was no match for Tara's demise. Winner: Tara's death by a landslide!

7. Arguably the first real crazy "Joss!" moment was when Angel and Buffy bumped uglies and caused Angel to become an evil, psychotic, mass murderer. That was a pretty harsh PSA if we ever saw one! Still, the portrayal of the events surrounding Buffy's mom's death stuck with us. Winner: Joyce's death

8. And finally, in another pretty tight fight, Wes's swan song vs Buffy's swan dive. Winner: Buffy saved the world a lot.

March Madness - The Hairpocalypse Tournament

Oh yeah, it's that time of year again! The time that everyone here at Buffyfest waits for because if it's March, Spring's not only just around the corner but it's also time for March Madness! Our ideas were getting stale, 'best character', 'worst character'...we needed something fresh, something tough and maybe a even a little silly and it's that type of MADNESS that brought us to the decision of "The Hairpocalypse".

Let's face it, there has been a lot of straight-up of bad style in the Whedonverse (and we can blame some of that on the 90's), but there has been some cool too. In this tournament, Buffy's bad bangs will battle Echo's dominatrix 'do. The post apocalytpic styling of "Epitaphs 1 & 2" will face off against Oz's many fabulous hair colors. So it doesn't matter what you're going for here: Wackiest, Worst, Wildest, Scariest, Funniest, whatever - let's just call this tourney it "Most Memorable" Hair of the Whedonverse. The type of hair that's so nuts, it could start the apocalypse.

The tournament starts now! Round 1, Region 1 will have 4 matches and will end Tuesday night at 11:59 PM EST. After that Round 1b will immediately begin.

March Madness Whedonverse Character Tourney Pt 3 - The Worst of the Lot

If you're just discovering this now, you're just in time to join the fun of March Madness - Part 3 of Round 1. We've changed things up this year and are trying to find find the opposite of our usual...specifically, who is the most hated character of the entire Whedonverse, i.e., The Worst of the Lot. We've been giving out randomized pairings of characters from Joss Whedon shows: Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse and Dr. Horrible and will be for the rest of the month. If the character sucks in your eyes, vote for them.

In part 3, we found out that the following people have been saved from fandom hatred:

-Dr Horrible (of course, he's way more loved than Halfrek)
-Ethan Rayne
-Simon
-Willow (but shockingly she did get 21 votes against Cassie Newton!)
-Wes
-Doc barely made it, but he did. Apparently Jesse is more hated.
-River is loved only slightly more than Illyria. So River is safe but I think Illyria will only last another round...especially since she's against Whistler, who apparently everyone hates (see below).
-Caleb is also safe! I'm surprised people hate Whistler, a voice of the PTB, more than Caleb! Scandal!
-Principal Wood, in the closest match of the round, is more loved than Moist by just a few votes. Poor Moist.
-Mr. Trick
-Larry
-The Judge (of all people!)
-Victor beat Echo for the fan's love
-Anya is safe, Penny is more hated!!
-Quentin Travers
-and finally, Dracula...who prolly wouldn't have been saved if he wasn't against The Beast.

March Madness Whedonverse Character Tournament - Sweet's Sixteen!

Welcome to the "March Madness" tourney - Whedon style! If you have no clue what the hell this is about, you've certainly missed a lot. After 3 weeks, we're now down to the final 16 best characters of the entire Whedonverse (Buffy, Angel, Firefly and Dr. Horrible) as voted by the people. The "Sweet Sixteen" as they say, but since it's the Whedonverse let's dub it the demon "Sweet's Sixteen". Of course, it's never too late to chime in and vote for your faves. It's really going to get crazy now!

Round 2b was one of the more painless ones. It seemed as if the hardest battle for people was Illyria vs. Andrew - with Illy taking it 60 to 53. Jayne vs. Cordy was another stumper, but Queen C kept her crown. The rest were easy breezy...the Cheeseman and Phantom Dennis are finally out. See below for the full list of winners:

Last Part of Round 1 - MARCH MADNESS 2013: "Most Shocking Moment" of the Whedonverse Tourney

OK, this last part will close out Round 1! It has been a very fun and enlightening tournament so far. Thanks to all the readers who are participating and if you're just joining us, this year's March Madness is aiming to learn: What is the most dramatically shocking moment of the Whedonverse? You know, those moments that make you scream "Joss!!" Here's a recap of the last round:

1. Faith murdered a man but apparently that wasn't all that surprising compared to the randomness of lil' Dawnie. Winner: Buffy gets a sister!

2. Reavers being chemically tweaked people was quite the twist! But Angel reigned when he went super darn and locked those lawyers in a room with Dru and the newly sired Darla. Winner: Angel lets the lawyers die!

3. In this "Evil Trio" themed battle, Jonathan's death fought Warren's death....no surprise that Dark Willow won the fight. Winner: Willow flays Warren!

4. Bennet and Penny's death were frickin neck-and-neck down to the last minute. Tragedy strikes often around these Whedony parts, and the fandom sure does get divided. Anyway Winner: Bennet's death (by 1 vote!)

5. This next one was a "sexy-time" theme. In the one corner we have Wes sleeping with the enemy, W&H's Lilah Morgan! In the other corner we have Faith (in Buffy's body) seducing Riley! Talk about a mind f*@k! Winner: Wes & Lilah do the nasty!

6. The moments leading up to when Dru waltzed in and re-sired Darla after she decided on a heroic human death were definitely intense, but come on. There is little in this tourney that will match Tara's demise. Winner: Tara's death!

7. One of Firefly's best moments was Mal locking Jayne out and nearly floating him out to space in "Ariel", but fans must have been rabid waiting for Angel's return bc it wasn't all that shocking, was it? Winner: Angel returns from Hell

8. This one was also super close! It was 50/50 well into midnight and actually held this post going up. In the end, the majority slightly favored "Buff going gangster on Faith" (to quote tweep @mbatz) over Darla offing herself for the life of baby Connor Winner: Buffy stabs Faith!

We have a Winner of MARCH MADNESS 2013: The "Most Shocking Moment" of the Whedonverse Tourney!

March has come to an end and so has our 7th tournament here on Buffyfest. We finally have an answer to a complicated and heavy question: Of all the shocking moments this 'verse has brought us over the years, which is the most abominable? Of those scenes that are usually followed by a black screen saying "Created by Joss Whedon", which was the most atrocious? Which makes you shake your fist in the air and scream "Joss!" more than any other?

The answer and clear winner is:

As we all know, Joss Whedon has killed so many of his beloved characters that it's arguably no longer even shocking. But there were a certain few special deaths that were particularly detestable and scandalous - Tara's is now officially the #1.

Who can say the exact reason why? Tara was a VERY popular character on BTVS and her profoundly moving relationship with Willow is considered a LBGT milestone in television and pop culture. People tend to describe Tara as genuine, compassionate and kind. It was all of these things combined that likely made viewers so devastated at the loss of her spot on the show. At the time of her death, fans pretty much revolted. The backlash and hate mail was considered staggering by the Mutant Enemy team and the media that covered it. It clearly still stings to this day! RIP, Tara....and damn you Joss Whedon.

Holy Moly, in Sweet's Sixteen: Wes beat Anya by a fricken hair! I'm not even kidding, he won 58 to Anya's 56 . That's crazy! Willow took the most overall votes 103 to Captain Hammer's 11 (the tool.) Illyria managed to receive 24 votes against the Buffster herself...lots of Illy fans there! Most of all, I'm personally pretty surprised to see Mal beat Oz. Oz is truly a beloved character but Dannit if you can't beat those Browncoats! See below for the full list of winners:

Round 1b of MARCH MADNESS 2013: "Most Shockingly Joss! Moment" of the Whedonverse Tourney

OK, we're making our way through Round 1 in this here March Madness! If you missed the first part, this year we're attempting to answer the question: What is the most dramatically shocking moment of the Whedonverse? You know those crazy moments that make you shake your fist in the air and scream "Joss!"

In the first part of Round 1, the results themselves were pretty shocking! Here's the rundown:

1. All of "Sleep Tight" is pretty intense, what with Wes getting jacked and Lilah staging a coup against Sahjan then Holtz stealing baby Connor and taking him to Quar'Toth! Whew! But even with all that, Darla's ressurection back in season 1 took the lead here. Winner: Darla's Ressurection

2. The race was super-tight between the iconic image of Angel snapping Jenny Calendar's Neck against that window and Fred's Death/Illyria's introduction....but I guess readers saw that Illyria thing coming! By a slim margin of just 5 votes out of nearly 600 Winner: Jenny's Neck Snappage

3. We're going with the theme here in the next one - Giles death in a similar fashion vs. Darla's Pregnancy Winner: Giles Neck Snappage!

4. Both proud sacrifices - Topher's vs Spike's. Winner: Spike Saves the World!

5. We grew to love Agent Coulson throughout the Marvel movies and his death was sad, but there are few things more shocking than poor Lorne's one last thing Winner: Lorne murders Lindsay McDonald.

6. In the S.4 premiere of Angel we learn Wes has Justine tied up in the closet, which I guess was crazier than Buffy's bi-curiosity since that was all over the media. Winner: Wes stashes Justine!

7. When it comes to Wash's death, not even Shepherd Book and an entire colony can shock more. This thing is going the distance, that's for sure. Winner: Wash's impalement!

8. Cordy giving birth to a power-that-be? Psshh, come on. Spike's soulfulness is a fan favorite. Winner: Spike gets a soul!

We here at Buffyfest definitely have our predictions, but at the end of this ambitious month long journey, we'll know for sure. Our own March Madness - The Whedonverse Character Tournament

Who is the best character of the entire Whedonverse? We all have our favorites, but in a match to the death...who would win the popular vote? Well, we are planning an ambitious month long journey to find out just that. Our own "March Madness" if you will. Over the next 4 weeks we will give out the computer-generated randomized pairings of characters from Joss Whedon shows: Buffy, Angel, Firefly and Dr. Horrible. Some of them are hilariously paired, too. Just wait and see.

By the way, we've done this before...back when Buffyfest was just a private forum with a few members. We'd get into fights. Matter of fact, one time Bitsy refused to put in her final choice for an episode - which would decide the Final Champion since it was a tie-breaker. It was something about defending Cordelia Chase's honor. Don't ask.

March Madness Round 2! The Whedonverse Character Tournament

So if you're just stumbling on to this now, you're right on time for Round 2 of this "March Madness" tourney - Whedon style. It's been designed to find the best/fan-favorite character of the entire Whedonverse (Buffy, Angel, Firefly and Dr. Horrible). Don't blame us if the choices are crazy, they were random at first but now are the result of your picks. From now on it's the "best of the best" and I know I'm scared.

Most of the last part were blow-outs. With the exception of maybe Connor vs. Lindsey (Lindsey won) they were all pretty one-sided. In fact, We finally had the first all out sweep in which Anya was victorious over Adam 50-0. This enraged Michelle since Buffy's match wasn't the same (Kendra managed 2 votes against her.) I think it has more to do with Adam's lameness than anything else. Here is the full list of winners:

A few stats if you're into number geekery: As far as shows go, BtVS is winning since it retained 52% of it's original characters. Dr. Horrible is in 2nd place there, holding on to 2 of the 4 that were placed in round 1. Angel held on to 46% and Firefly is last as they lost quite a bit of their team and only have 44% left. Come on Browncoats! Don't get a jelly-belly on us now.
