Cue the Exploding Brain Effect

I am shocked this video hasn't been posted absolutely everywhere by now. Did James Marsters not just say that Buffy and Angel should be the ones together and that the relationship between Buffy and Spike was, ultimately, an unhealthy one??? Am I alone in thinking that's kind of huge? Weigh in here. As the man who played the part and wrote for the role in comic form, how much weight do you give his words and do they effect your opinion of Spike and Buffy's relationship?

I think he was spot-on. I always enjoyed Spike more than Angel and I wish that the writers would have made the Buffy/Spike thing a bit healthier, but the way that it was portrayed? Yeah, Marsters is right about that.

I think he is right and he has had that point of view before. Both James and SMG did not think the Buffy/Spike relationship was a healthy thing, but realized that is sometimes what people in pain do. Unhealthy sexy things.

He's such a cute fanboy I feel like DB didn't even really watch the show(s) but JM has formed his hard core opinions by being a real fan. SMG is that way too. Seems they feel the same way about the season 6 portion of the Spike/Buffy relationship, as well.

Of course Spike and Buffy was an unhealthy relationship. That's what made it so real. It was sexy, but the sexy is the main reason we date the wrong person in the first place.

I mean, c'mon, the whole reason she wen to him in the first place was that she couldn't tell anyone she actually cared about that she was in heaven when she was dead.

Sorry Anonymous, I am a Spike crazy and did not poop my pants, I agree 100% it was not healthy, and I have been there and done that, but Spuffy was what kept me coming back to the series, not Bangel. I never really cared for Angel, but let him turn into Angelus and I was a big fan. I have always loved the "bad boys". James did say the writers wrote that Angel was better for Buffy, but if it had been up to him, Spike would have gotten her.

I believe that neither one was right for Buffy anymore. She out grew Angel and Spike was not right for her. But I belive they all care for each other. So Buffy for me gets neither one.

As a hardcore Buffy/Angel shipper, I say he's only seeing what is true. Besides, I think Juliet Landau had said that she wished Spike and Dru could reunite.

Oh, I know James' opinion about Spike / Buffy relationship – it's not new for me.;)) You can read all his thoughts about it here:

But it doesn't mean that I'm 100 % agree with him. And Elaine has a point - Spuffy was what kept me coming back to the series, not Bangel. I have nothing against Bangel – I liked their relationship and I hated Buffy / Riley relationship, because I didn't like that soldier guy at all – I love Spike and Angel – yeah, both of them. But why do I prefer Spuffy over Bangel – Bangel was romantic, but very boring relationship (I loved Angel with Cordy more), Spuffy was pure passion, sex and far from boring. And Spuffy was more complex relationship, more interesting and unusual and it did develop during the seasons. Well, I have to agree – on season 6 Spuffy wasn't healthy relationship – they have hurt each other – she used him and Spike tried to hurt her. But when Spike earned his soul for her, the things became different – they started to trust to each other and to care for each other – she defended Spike, he defended her... and in the end of the season in the episode Touched they were in love – both of them not only Spike. And in Chosen Buffy had choose Spike for her champion, not Angel. And I really want to see what would be her reaction if she meets Spike and Angel again (I think she has to know about Spike's resurrection) – but unfortunately Sarah have been busy during Angel season 5 and she turned down her guest star role on Girl in the question. And the writers of season 8 comic book totally abandoned that storyline...

It's nice to hear that from him. Maybe it'll sink into a few heads that Spike is all wrong for her.

Honestly though, Buffy should be with Xander. They're perfect for one another.

I find it kind of weird, and pretty sad that James mentions the Willow&Tara kiss as his highlight of the series. Not because it happened, and what it meant, but because it meant that much. The world of TV would be much better if the US television didn't have such a ridiculous approach on anything sexual...

And Buta Rose, Xander? Seriously? The guy that trashed her when she got back from running away, was extremely harsh about her boyfriends (minus Riley), up to trying to kill them, and in more than one occasion was a selfish bastard with no regards to Buffys feeling. There were good moments, but at least as many bad ones...

Oh, yeah, Buta Rose – Xander/Buffy rock!!! They would make number 1 The Worst Tv Couple Ever!!! Congrats! LOL

I definitely prefer Angel to Spike as a suitor, as I am disinclined to ever find 'bad' or 'evil' to be sexually exciting. In character and morality I'm also much more an Angel than a Spike, so I would hope that girls would rather choose the former.

That having been said, I don't think Buffy's behavior was often worthy of the boyfriends she had, her special destiny notwithstanding. Xander's maturity was manifesting itself by 'The Zeppo', and he was already becoming the heart and conscience of the gang and developing the insight he would share with Dawn in season 7: to paraphrase, that those with superhuman powers and responsibilities would never understand the difficulty of being 'normal'; this all came before Cordelia started to develop from her superficial nature, Willow emerged as a power in her own right, or Giles gave Buffy respect as a human rather than as a Slayer. Of the gang, only Oz was more mature.

In contrast, Buffy was inconsistently trustworthy at best, making a logical and moral decision only by or around the finale of each season. This was necessitated, to some degree, by her role as protagonist, and I certainly find her a fascinating and powerful character, but it makes me reluctant to wish her mercurial affections upon another boyfriend. If there were anyone who could be a friend true and stoic enough to withstand her, though, I should think it would be Xander.

I always thought that the Buffy/Spike relationship was unhealthy but she was just desperate to feel anything but the grief she was feeling after being taken out of heaven. She was in pain and sometimes people can get destructive.

In season seven, it wasn't as unhealthy... but it was never about love like it was with Angel.

I totally love this, and he has a great point. When you think about it, and see what he has done for her, Spike is perfect for Buffy. He will let her dominate and walk all over him at times, but he will stand up to her, whereas Angel was always her little lapdog. Angel and Buffy are overdramatic and tragic, good for t.v. but not realistic.

I, personally, am a CAngel kind of gal (please refrain from throwing your fruit/vegetable of choice) and think that Cordy and Angel would've also been a perfect match if her character wouldn't have been totally slaughtered.

Sorry, Bitsy, I'm a Spuffy fan and I didn't "poop my pants" as your supporters think. James always said that Buffy loves Angel - I think he was and still is channeling his inner Spike. And every time he repeats it, Spuffy-haters rejoyce and celebrate their next victory. It's getting old.

Gracie Girl - I totally agree about Angel/Cordy. They are a perfect match!

I find it pretty telling that even though an anonymous poster made that comment, you took the time to come down on me about it, Elena. This video was the first time I had seen James comment on the Buffy and Spike relationship this way so it was news to me and I was honestly curious as to what people thought of it either way.

Read all the comments above yours. People commented both ways and I didn't say so much as one derisive word to anyone. The only who did that was you when you came after me personally. It's childish and a little sad that you felt the need to call me out without reason. How am I supposed to react to that?

Grow up. Seriously.

Elena said...

Sorry, Bitsy, I was wrong.

Apparently, it will never grow old.

No matter how many years will pass Bangels will still "be curious what people think of James Marsters comments on Buffy and Spike" and be shocked that his opinions "hasn't been posted absolutely everywhere".
