Wait, Whedonless what now?

Don't ask what we were doing all day, but I'll tell you now that a dark development was revealed in the subject of the long rumored Whedonless Buffy movie.

I'm still calling bullshit on this whole thing, but since Joss himself commented today, let's play the game: Warner Brothers is apparently officially moving forward on a new feature film of the Whedonless Buffy the Vampire Slayer, having secured the rights from KuzuiFail and others. Here's the official press release:

LOS ANGELES, NOVEMBER 11, 2010 – Atlas Entertainment announced today it is rebooting the beloved franchise, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with Warner Bros. Pictures. Atlas' Charles Roven and Steve Alexander will produce the feature film alongside Doug Davison and Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment (The Ring, How to Train Your Dragon, The Departed). Whit Anderson is writing the script.

Warner Bros. Pictures optioned the rights from creators Fran and Kaz Kuzui, and from Sandollar Productions (Sandy Gallin and Dolly Parton), for Atlas and Vertigo to produce. Buffy the Vampire Slayer first appeared as a film in 1992, subsequently becoming a cult hit and spawning the wildly popular television series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz, among many others.

"Whit approached us with an exciting idea about how to update Buffy," said Roven. "There is an active fan base eagerly awaiting this character's return to the big screen. We're thrilled to team up with Doug and Roy on a re-imagining of Buffy and the world she inhabits. Details of the film are being kept under wraps, but I can say while this is not your high school Buffy, she'll be just as witty, tough, and sexy as we all remember her to be."

The biggest question there is, did YOU know that Dolly Parton had rights into the Buffy franchise? I KNOW! Neither did we. You learn something new every day....

Anyway, here is El Jefe's response, via an e-mail sent to E! Online:

"This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths — just because they can’t think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself.

Obviously I have strong, mixed emotions about something like this. My first reaction upon hearing who was writing it was, “Whit Stillman AND Wes Anderson? This is gonna be the most sardonically adorable movie EVER.” Apparently I was misinformed. Then I thought, “I’ll make a mint! This is worth more than all my Toy Story residuals combined!” Apparently I am seldom informed of anything. And possibly a little slow. But seriously, are vampires even popular any more?

I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death. But, you know, AFTER. I don't love the idea of my creation in other hands, but I'm also well aware that many more hands than mine went into making that show what it was. And there is no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly. I can't wish people who are passionate about my little myth ill. I can, however, take this time to announce that I'm making a Batman movie. Because there's a franchise that truly needs updating. So look for The Dark Knight Rises Way Earlier Than That Other One And Also More Cheaply And In Toronto, rebooting into a theater near you.

Leave me to my pain! Sincerely, Joss Whedon."

Illyria Extravaganza Day Three: The Review (SPOILERS)

The Preamble: Back when Mariah first took over as the lead editor for the Angel series at IDW, I asked her for one thing, just one.  I called dibs on an Illyria series.  But did she listen?  No.  She'd had designs on the blue one all her own and, since she's the editor and I'm, well, the guy who writes reviews about comics, she won out.  You win this round, Huehner, but you've not heard the last of… wait, what?  Oh, right.  Dark Horse.

Hey, Scott Allie?  I'm a good writer and an even better ass kisser, do you think I could…. no?  Bugger.  Alright then.  On with the show.

The Review: Since this is a "night before the book is released" kind of thing, let's keep this short, sweet, and spoiler free…t (that was a bad rhyme, that).  So!  Illyria.  Really old, kinda blue, walks around wearing the face of a dead woman that a whole bunch of people really liked.  What's a sort of girl to do when she finally gets tired of punching things?  Why, she goes on a bit of a spirit quest to figure out her place in the world, of course.  And with this first issue we get the introduction to exactly that.

One of the goals here is to do something that hasn't ever been done properly before: get inside Illyria's head.  This is the one spot where Mariah and my opinion's differed a little.  This incarnation of Illyria is rather chatty, in the voice over department.  I imagine Illyria as being stoic and sparsely contemplative, even when she's at the proverbial crossroads.  But here she's teeming with things to say.  There are times when that works remarkably well but there are a few times it feels a bit forced.  That's my one quibble but, if truth be told, we've got some catching up to do on Illyria's identity and there's only four issues to do it in so I get the logic behind the decision.

In this first issue, Illyria seeks out two people for council: Angel and Spike.  One of the ways that this issue really excels is at capturing just how different Angel and Spike are in how they relate to the world.  Angel can be good at his own journey towards self discovery but he's complete rubbish at helping anyone else.  Spike, on the other hand, will be around for several issues because he actually knows how to be, you know, emotionally useful.  Both their characterizations are spot on.

The story construction for this issue is simple but effective: philosophical pondering bookended by ass kicking.  Sounds like exactly what you'd expect an Illyria story to be.  But it's more than that.  It's a real character piece, an in depth analysis of what makes her tick and it's very clear that whoever she was, whatever she is right now, is all about to change.  In all the quiet moments of this issue you can feel that we're teetering right at the edge of something massive.

More than anything, though, we should be talking about the art which is absolutely magnificent.  Elena's pencils and Ilaria's colors combine to make what, for my money, is the best looking book we've seen in the Angel franchise.  Not only is it absolutely gorgeous but it also fits perfectly with Illyria as a character and with this particular story.  I found myself just staring at individual panels and marveling at just how impressive they are.

When you get to the end of this issue, I think you're going to want to read it again.  You might even find yourself reading it not just twice, but thrice.  It's that good.  And there's a lot more to come, including a homage to Labyrinth, a number of brand new characters, and a return to the Deeper Well.

I give this issue four and three quarters Old One Sarcophagi out of five.

Stay tuned for tomorrow where we'll be previewing some more pencil art and sharing the interview we did with Mariah back at NYCC.

Scott Allie Speaks on Buffy #39's Cover

Buffy #38 wrapped with Angel punching Buffy into a wall and announcing himself Twilight.  A lot of folks asked "Why was the cover for #39 withheld?"  Super Scott Allie gives us the answer:

"We know that at this point Buffy fighting Angel on a cover isn't the biggest surprise, but we wanted to conceal the #39 cover so as not to step on the final scene of #38. Now that #38 is out, we figured it made sense to reveal the complete cover right away. We're not expecting a marketing blitzkrieg, but we had to withhold the cover till now, and we always get lots of requests to see Jo's next cover ASAP, so we thought we'd get the cover out far and wide. If only we'd perfected the technique a little earlier ... "

And there you have it!

A Shepherd's Tale Review (Spoilers)

The Preamble: There are two things I do not typically consider myself to be: a browncoat or a fan of Derrial Book. I watched Firefly, sure. I saw Serenity in theaters. But unlike most Whedon fans out there, I never quite made that visceral connection to that world and those characters. Book, especially, was someone I never identified with. So imagine my surprise when this graphic novel went on to be the best Firefly comic to come out thus far. Rather than the usual synopsis then review format, I'm going to do it all in one section so, heads up, some spoilers are headed your way.

The Review: This story is sort of like peeling back the layers of a life. We start with the surface and we go deeper, and deeper, right down to the core of what makes a man. We open with Book's final moments and, as we do when we're fictional characters, with his lasts breaths he reflects on what brought him to this moment.

First on the journey back, unsurprisingly, is Serenity and it's here where Zack and Joss excel best. It may just be that every one of those characters was so perfectly cast but, truly, every voice is pitch perfect. There's a little something for people who like Jayne and River, plenty of love for the Kaylee fans, and a great moment involving Mal and Zoe beating the snot out of someone who saw fit to cross them.

Then begins the great foreshadowing because, really, what we want to know is how Book came to be known by the Alliance. But first our Shepherd needs to say farewell to the Church he called home, the one that saved him. He was in quite a state when he first arrived there. Foreboding, foreboding, foreboding, foreboding. Not sure we needed this moment, but have I mentioned it's foreboding? Cuz it is!

Back further. And drunk. Derrial is forcibly removed from the local dive bar I assume he is not unknown to frequent when an Alliance officer recognizes him. The officer mentions his little brother and the tragedy that befell him on the I.A.V. Alexander. And again I say FOREBODING!

Before we move backwards again, we get what is the defining moment where Book discovers his own spirituality. It's all done through the analysis of a bowl of soup and its place in the universe. Yup. This has got Joss's fingerprints all over it. The man loves to explain life through food. He should write a cookbook. It would be called "We're All Going to Die but, SHIT, this tastes delicious!"

Let's go back a little further. How does "Officer Book" sound to you? Now we're getting somewhere. And by "somewhere" I mean "Book having his ship retreat leaving behind who knows how many Alliance soldiers to die." This on its own is an interesting layer because it is completely different from the original assumption most people had. Everyone thought Book was a hero to the Alliance. Turns out he is a total failure. Or is he?

So we peel back further to when Book is starting out in the Alliance and, damn, he sure does like beating information out of people, even when it isn't necessary. In fact, as we go back even further, we see that hitting things is a bit of a Derrial Book specialty.

So here's the deal. Book is very similar to Angel. Because he does things that he thinks is for the greater good at great sacrifice to the lives of everyone around him. Before he was in the Alliance, he was against them. He was part of a group fighting them. So that failure when all those people in the Alliance died? Maybe not so much a failure, exactly, if you're someone who believes in necessary collateral damage by way of lots of dead soldiers. Because, in this moment, that's the kind of dude Book is. And that? Is fucking awesome. I mean absolutely horrific, sure. I wouldn't want to know the guy because I'm sure I'd wind up dead but, as a character? He just got a lot more interesting. Hell, I kind of want to go back and re-watch Firefly right now for hints of this side of Book.

But before that I want to quote the end of the story where we see how this character started out. A kid, getting beat on the regular by his drunken pops, running away from home. He walks down a deserted alley (sound familiar?) He thinks to himself:

"You see, this life is a fight and if you sit still, someone will get the drop on you. They'll pin you down. I won't let that happen. I'll protect myself, take what I need, and keep moving. Because it's every man for himself. Get out of my way.

This life is mine."

I think that says it all, really, doesn't it? Sure there are some moments that felt a little wasted and unnecessary, but there are so many revelations about this character. Like so much of the Firefly universe, he is now whole, complete. Which is the best thing about this whole brownout thing Joss crafted. It's his most cohesive work and he did it in far less time than anything else he's ever created. Book was out there in "don't know, don't care" land for so long but now? He's fascinating! I love that there's this selfishness at the root of him. I love that he sacrificed countless lives for a greater good he wasn't even sure of. There's something so vain and awful and brilliant and human about him now that I never knew until right now. So thanks to the Whedon bros (for whom there should be an 8-bit style side-scroller made) and thanks to Chris Samnee for giving the whole thing this great murky feel that fit the story just right.

Go pick it up, if you haven't already. And Scott? Get Zack and Joss to make more. Beg if you must. Because this? This was great.

Buffy #38 Review (Spoilers)

The Preamble: It occurs to me that I'm going to live just long enough to regret what I said on preview night and then be brutally murdered by a very angry fanbase.  At the time, it seemed like saying something exciting to get people jumpy would be a good idea.  I thought it would be, you know... fun?  I guess what I'm trying to say is: Dead Blogger Walking.  In the past I've done the plot first followed by the review.  Since we're so close, I'm going to review first with as few spoilers as possible and then post the plot but keep it blacked out for those who want to wait until they get the actual issue.  Consider it an olive branch in the hope that I won't be drawn and quartered (or become the subject of hate!fic for years to come... if I'm not already, that is).

The Review: I woke up this morning and realized I was supposed to write this review yesterday and now I'd have to do a rush job.  In some ways, that forces me to pull out all the stops, try for something really impressive to compensate for the fact that I'm winging it as I go.  I know it's been four years, I know there was a meeting between Joss and Scott to go over everything, but I can't help but feel like this issue reads as though it was written on the fly.  There's just so much happening and, at times, it feels convoluted.  Twilight, the Seed, Buffy, Angel, Spike, the possible end of magic, the US army, Bug One, it's everything and the kitchen sink which leaves very little breathing room.  It is, in essence the antithesis of "The Weight of the World".

On the plus side, when it fires, it does so on all cylinders.  The betrayer is now looking more like "betrayers".  I really like how every character has their own unique and conflicting motivations right now.  There's something mature and honest about close friends drifting apart even when they're standing right next to one another.  I also like how there's still some mystery left.  With all the major notes, one of my biggest questions was "What is Giles playing at?" and he wasn't even all that actively involved this time around.

There are only two issues left before the curtain falls and every character is set to go through some major changes.  There's a reason Season 9 will be split into multiple titles.  I don't think anyone is going to be able to look each other in the eye.  So, yes.  All very exciting, big cliffhanger ending, I just hope it all makes some semblance of sense when the dust clears.

The Plot: I can't believe they killed... that random bug on Bug One!  Yes, yes.  Throw your sticks, your rotten produce, possibly your very sharp knives, hurl me down a flight of steps onto some bullets.  It was a bit of a psyche out.  Tantalizing people is an imperfect science.  I might have gone a bit wrong this go around.  If you could maybe not murder me, that would be cool.  But back to the beginning!

The preview you know.  Angel fights with the Twilight Lion, the Master has a chat with the Scoobies while all hell breaks loose outside, and then demons show up and smack the crap out of Dawn.  Now... they fight, the demons demand Willow tell them where "it" is by which I assume they mean the seed.  They fight some more, Willow nearly sets Spike on fire, it's a bit of a scene.  Demons defeated, Xander holds Dawn.  She looks... not good.  Dawn groans "Buffy..."

She's alright.  Sort of.  Xander complains that she's a bit too heavy to carry which raises some girlfriend snark.  Body image issues are hilarious!  Buffy sends Xander and Dawn away to get Dawn some care away from the fight and we can see that Dawn is, at least, able to walk on her own.

The Master tells Buffy he needs her to help him guard the seed.  In a single panel we see Angel, elsewhere) just his face but it's kind of... green and his eyes are completely yellowed out.  He's zombie Angel.  Meanwhile, Buffy isn't terribly interested in working with her first big bad (barring Lothos, of course).  She snaps off a make shift stake and tells Spike to hold the Master down.  Willow stops this by telling Buffy that they are currently losing the war and that, if the Master wants what they want, then he's part of the team.  There's an argument since, you know, the Master kind of killed Buffy that one time.  Willow brushes it off by saying that Buffy and Spike weren't always "B.F.F.'s" which is a pretty shitty comparison frankly.  Buffy rightly calls out Willow and asks her what happened when she went temporarily comatose.  Willow admits to being "summoned" by her sexy snake lady but when Buffy asks what was said, Willow deflects.  "If the seed can connect the spiritual realms to this new Twilight Sex Eden you created, maybe we can use it to heal the Earth, chase the demons out.  Maybe we can use it to make the world better, Buffy".

And now we're in the room with the seed.  Yes, that room.  The casa de betrayal sauce.  The Master's eyes turn red.  He's in a bit of a thrall.  There is thrallage.  He attacks Buffy and hurls Spike across the room.  He announces that the seed is "not without its defenses" and, indeed, it would seem that Buffy has no power here.  The Master tells Buffy that she is the same little girl he met years ago, that he can still smell the acne scrub.  Wait, Buffy used acne scrub?  Anyway, it looks like he's going to kill Buffy, Giles looks like he'll shoot either the Master or maybe the seed but instead Willow stops him and tells the Master that they will help him protect the seed.  This, for some reason, temporarily stops the Master long enough for Willow to tell Buffy to get out of there.  Giles ushers Buffy away and they have part one of what I am now deeming "the talk".  No, not the birds and the bees.  It's about how the seed was there all along, how did Giles not know?  It can Kill Buffy and Angel?  Giles says that he didn't understand the Twilight thing save for the idea that is was "terrifying".  They cop to the fact that the whole "Chosen" thing is the reason Twilight became possible.  Buffy does that thing she does where she blames herself for every death in the history of forever.

Meanwhile, there's Angel.  I, uh... uh oh.  He's laying down, the lion stand over him.  "Stand up".  He does.  "Fly".  Yeah, that, too.  I guess the Master's not the only one under a thrall today.

On Bug One, the General smashes one of the bugs over the head... to death.  Yup.  Your death for #38, everybody (please, no real life murderin' times!)  Warren and Amy wonder why they didn't do that a while ago but the General isn't interested in spending anymore time with them.  He splits the scene to go and find his army buddies.

Back to Buffy and Giles for "the talk" part dos.  Well, Spike is there now so there's more planning than talking.  Buffy needs to get in the fight and so does Spike but Spike can't exactly go strolling out into daylight.  That's fine, stand around long enough and the fight will come to you.  Before that, though, Giles makes with the inspiration words.

"This may be Sunnydale, but we're not running 'round cemeteries anymore, Buffy.  You're not that girl.  You've become something I never could have imagined."

"Giles, these powers"

"I don't mean the powers.  But you must put those powers to use now.  And I can help, but not here.  I'll see you when this is over..."

Yeah... what the hell, comic?  Are you going to kill Giles?  Sorry, sorry.  The plot!  Giles busts a move and the demons make towards Buffy and Spike.  And, shucks howdy, that's a whole mess of demons.

Army tent.  Xander and Dawn turn up and run into the General.  You'd think this would be a bit of a problem but the General is happy to help stitch up Dawn.  He also has some choice words for Xander.

"You seem like a normal guy, could even be mistaken for a solider.  Our intel says there's a way to end all this, you know.  There's something here.  All we gotta do is destroy it.  All the fighting ends.  That's why your friends shot down there, right?  But they want to protect it, don't they?  Son, believe me, I understand the temptation of power, but are they so addicted to it they want all *this*, too?"

Did someone say "addiction"?  Oh, look, it's Willow!  Miss "magic is a drug" herself.  She's got the Master in some magical shackles.  And she's talking... to the Master?  Nope.  To the seed.

"Awake in peace!  Your eyes that dart the rays of the sun, whose divine power is great on the head of the goddess!  Your heart is the beat of life, that gives life to all!  The queen of Earth undying the regent in the west, and in the east, the Divine Mother who ascends to the throne!"

Willows eyes are bright red.  Yes, it's a trilogy o' thrall, this week.

"Let your sworn protector stand against your enemies!"

To be continued?  No?  You mean there's more?  Alright then!
Buffy and Spike at the mouth of the cave, beating back the demon horde.  Uh oh, there's a really big one and Spike isn't sure how they'll take it down.  Suddenly, the demon just bursts.  Oh, good, it's Angel.  Buffy is relieved.  Except we, the audience, know that something isn't right in Angel-ville and we can see that his eyes are red-rimmed.  He punches Buffy into a wall.  Spike shouts "Angelus!"  Yeah... no.  Angel grabs Spike and throws him into what I think is outside, into the sunlight. Ruh roh.

In response to the "Angelus" accusation.  Buffy says "No" and Angel responds simply with "Twilight".

Now we're at the end.  Wowzers!  See you next month assuming I'm not dead by fandom.

Buffy #38 and A Shepherd's Tale: Preview Night

We got them, we read them and we've got something to say about them...not too much, though. Nothing spoilery, just teasingly tantalizing.

With the last few issues of Buffy moving in fast, we'll be having preview nights for each of the remaining stories to get everyone hyped for what we can only guess will be a painful, shocking and brain-crushing Buffy Season Finale. Stay tuned for those. Here are our thoughts for Issue #38:

Michelle: So, I see where this is going and all roads are definitely leading to badness. Poor everyone. Oh, and if that lioness is supposed to be Buffy and Angel's offspring, I just don't see the resemblance.

Bitsy: I can't believe they killed...

Tara: Um guys? I'm scrrred.

It's been a busy week in the Whedonverse with the additional release of the long awaited story of our favorite Preacher in, A Shepherd's Tale.

Michelle: This story was written really well. The character voices are spot on. I love Sheperd Book in all his complicated glory and it's complicated for sure.

Bitsy: I thought Angel made some questionable choices for the greater good but, damn, just... damn.

Tara: This is a nice one! When I finished reading the last page, I felt myself needed that next one more than I have in a long time. Oh, and the art in this is just beautiful.

Whedonverse Celebs - Halloween 2010!

Halloween 2010 is now over and Celebs of the Whedoverse really stepped up their game this year. First up, the Hannigan-Denisof clan. Last year when little Satyana was a wee tot they dressed her up as a fuzzy pink dog, but then the whole fam got together for round 2 and dressed as fricken' adorable Kangaroos. Now that Saty has grown a bit, they decided to all dress up as a bunch of toys! Check out Alexis as a Toy Soldier! He rocks! Alyson Hannigan went as Raggedy Ann and Saty is an adorable sock puppet. Love them!

Next is the Queen of the Whedonverse, Buffy herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar and little Charlotte Prinze. This is Charlotte's first Halloween and Mama has put her in a Dorothy costume from The Wizard of Oz. Cute, but I wish Smidge would take a page out of Willow's book and get in the Halloween spirit herself instead of wearing that incredibly chic quilted leather jacket she's got on! Oh well, I'll forgive her if she signs on for a Buffy movie some time this year.

Last but most certainly not least, is little Dawnie, Michelle Trachtenberg, who very clearly wins the creepiest costume of the year award. Michelle went for a Child Beauty Pageant Queen, complete with huge tiara, frilly socks, blonde hair set in pipe curls, boxed doll pose and CRAZY EYES! AAGH! WITH FAUX LASHES! Yeesh.

Click to enlarge all photos. Hope you had a great Halloween!
