Vote for the Buffy and Angel Comics at the Wizard Awards

Buffy and Angel are both up for awards at the 17th Annual Wizard Fan Awards. To be fair to both of our favorite heroes, let's split up the votes, so they both get to win. Angel's up for two awards with "Favorite Licensed Comic" (along with Buffy) at #26 and IDW for "Favorite Publisher" at #8. Then move onto Buffy for "Favorite ongoing Series" at #3, "Favorite Female" at #23 and Scott Allie at #14 for "Favorite Editor".
Also, the Willow Statuette is up for "Favorite Merchandise" at #28.

Happy Birthday Amber Benson!
A great, big Happy 32nd Birthday to Amber Benson. She captured our hearts as Tara Maclay on Buffy and her incredible gifts as a writer and filmmaker kept us coming back for more. Keep an eye out for her this year with her new novel, Death's Daughter, due out February 24th and don't forget to catch her at New York Comic Con where she'll be on the panel Writers on Writing on Sunday, February 8th.
Why is a Dr. Horrible sequel more exciting than Dollhouse?
"Beyond the fact that I'm excited about pursuing that story and that world, I love the fact that, you know, you can make something and just put it up without, you know, without having to reshoot the whole thing."—Joss Whedon on [Sci-Fi Wire]
Holy Moly! Dr. Horrible wins the People's Choice Award!

Fans Rejoice! We're a really good fandom, you know that? Anyway, they just sent this via Twitter:

Live Bloggin' Suburban Girl Part 2

Here again, here again, jiggity jig. Welcome to part two of the agonizingly awful Suburban Girl. Here's another whole ten minutes of torturetainment for your snarking... pleasure?
As usual, click on "Continue Reading" to view my commentary once you're done watching. Weigh in here, folks. Should I continue this series? Thus far only Sarah and thegift have commented (thanks, ladies!). I'd like to escape the vacuum of interweb space and find out whether anyone else is enjoying this. What say ye? Shall I continue, yay or nay? Post in the comments please or for sure I will totally like die or something... totally! To death! Onto the commentary...
- Ironically, the giant Bunny was played by Emma Caulfield. You get it? You see what I did there? Because Anya was afraid of... yeah... yeah. You know it's a free show, folks.

- They're in a sweets shop presumably to establish that Alec Baldwin is diabetic. Instead we've established that Alec Baldwin looks like a giant pedophile when next to Smidge.
- Dear Alec Baldwin: You *are* the suckling pig and I want to punt you across the room.
- Chris Hanson wrote a book, too. Perhaps you've heard of it? It's called "To Catch a Predator"!

- Your aunt's parties were legendary... as was her vaginal canal. Seriously, thing is like the length of a football field.
- A boyfriend, says you? How much money do you wager he's a complete tool box?
- In what way does gesturing in some random direction signify 'Europe'?
- Hello, office stereotype! In fairness, I have met many a douche nozzle dude who does push ups at the office. Dude. We got it. You are not so well endowed. They're called sex toys and women the world over love them.
- Why is Smidge checking Eurotrash's pantsless ass out? And why is she kind of half smirking at it in approval? I thought she only goes in for pudgy, diabetics... or Freddie Prinze Jr. Which one of those do you think is worse?

- Eurotrash speaks french. This is suppoed to make her even more eurotrashy and annoying. I like her though. I like her specifically because this movie wants me not to. I'm a spiteful bitch that way.
- Did Metrovestual just accuse Smidge of sleeping to the top and the other girl of being ugly and incapable of sleeping to the top? Can this movie be any more misogynistic?
- It would be sweet that she called her dad for moral support if it weren't completely evident that the motif of this film is "Are you a girl? You better depend upon older men because you can't possibly do anything by yourself without becoming a slutty, pantsless, eurotrash whore in the process!"

- And once again Alec Baldwin is telling Smidge what to do. Guess what? She finds it romantic. Please, kill me now...
- A department store where women are actually *fighting* over clothes. I stab at thee, movie. Stabbity, stabbity, stab, stab, STAB!
- Oh my god she bought a new outfit for the date! Are you fucking kidding me? And it involves leather pants! Wait. Don't tell me. I got it! He has a Buffy fetish!

- Oh wait, no. She switched to jeans. I don't know whether to be relieved or annoyed. I was kind of hoping that she'd show up to his apartment and stab him in the heart with a wooden stake.
- Holy shit, indeed. Emphasis on the shit.
Truer words were never spoken

While you wait for your very own copy of Buffy #21, you might want to take a gander towards the Dark Horse MySpace page where none other than Jane Espenson has penned what I can only hope is a preview of what's to come. Not only do we get Harmony in all her duplicitous glory trying to feign her best Sookie Stackhouse but we also get a guest appearance from possibly our favorite supporting Buffy character (I won't spoil it here). Well? What are you waiting for? Go! No, wait! First, check out this awesomeness
Cutesy Poopsy Unicorn says: "Don't forget to come back to Buffyfest later for a full fledged review of Buffy #21: Harmonic Divergence! I like frolicking in the woods. Whee!"Tuesday, January 6, 2009
Happy Anniversary to Buffyfest!
Wow! We started 1 year ago as a private blog and now have over 300 posts viewed in over 100 countries! The Whedonverse community sure is vast and fabulous! We've met some awesome people and hope to meet many more this year at both the New York and San Diego ComiCons.
To commemorate this event, we're going to list the top 5 moments of the past year for our own personal pleasure:
The creation of the blog. It's obvious, but it's #1. It won't ever be on this list again, so there it is. I started it on a whim in anticipation of one of the Buffyfest parties and it's become our part time jobs.
The Buffy Winter-Con + Buffyfest 2008 - As I said, the Buffyfests are the reason we started this. They're fun, they rock, they get mispronounced by Mike's Dad. He calls it "BuffyFEAST" and we are, of course, now having a Buffyfeast. Fancy dinner party with Buffy. Can't think of a better way to spend a dreary winter night!
It's a picture on the blog of a book about the blog, with the blog in it. Ha!
We interviewed writer Kelley Armstrong! It was great to have the chance to speak with her in the summer and we're equally excited to read Angel: Aftermath which is actually coming out really soon! Seemingly the very same day the Angel:After the Fall ends on Feb 25th.
Us at the Dr. Horrible Sing-Along at the NYC Paleyfest just last month! Fun end to the year.
Thanks, Bitsy and Michelle, for this past year of Whedon-filled fun. Love you guys. - T
I'm so proud of what we've accomplished in just one year. Can't wait to see what the next year holds! - Michelle
Holy smokes! Where did 2008 go? Willow, did you do a spell? Oh, well. It's been super fun times so far and I can't wait to unveil all the awesome surprises we have in store for 2009! - Bitsy

Fanvid Sunday
It is hardly uncommon for Sundays to be treacherously slow of pace when it comes to Whedon related fare but should that mean you must endure twenty four torturous hours with not so much as the briefest moment of Buffy love? I dare say nay! I also dare say I watched all of Lost in Austen today and thusly am using period language. By the way, totally watch Lost in Austen. Before that though, won't you partake of this steamy Bangel fanvid created lovingly by the one and only Leviathan who is, in my mind, one of the best fanvidders out there for this or any fandom?
I apologize if this leaves you Spuffy fanciers wanting. Oh, very well. Might I introduce raspberry_splat whose video Anything But Love should, with my greatest hopes, tied you over?
To my Dearest Xuffies,
Sorry. No dice.
Love, Bitsy

Review - Demons - Episode 01 - "They Bite"

When yet another show gets toted as "Buffy for Brits", it's not the A level journos you want to poke at the show with a stick to see if it twitches, it's a fan. You've heard from the best, now here from the rest. I mean, sure, you could take the advice of seasoned, professional reviewers but really, honestly, deep down... you want to hear it from me, don't you? So what's the verdict? Is it really that bad? Should any self respecting Buffy fan watch it? Before we answer the question of questions, let's run a quick recap, just for fun:
The concept: Luke Rutherford, average teenager extraordi-notsomuch, discovers he is the sole descendant of the Van Helsing line. He is the one girly boy in all the world, a Chosen One, if you will. Oh, and sometimes his friends help too. Sound familiar?
The players:
Luke Rutherford: He's Buffy with boy parts and, good news, he's cute!
Rupert Galvin: Luke's Watch... uh, I mean, Warrior. Rupert is the old salt who shows this young buck the ropes.
Mina Harker: Blind opera singer and descendant of, you guessed it, Jonathan Harker. She's got that whole vision thing going on. Plus? She likes weapons a bunch.
Ruby: Luke's "friend". The love interest. She seems to like screaming, running away, and being obnoxious so far. Some character development would be keen.
Episode Synopsis: I won't spoil too much in case you opt to give this show a chance. Luke's godfather he didn't know he had, Rupert Galvin, turns up out of the blue. All the demons, vampires, and other supernatural critters of London town have, for reasons as yet unknown, worked out that Luke is the great, great, grand baby boy of Victor Van Helsing and they are out for blood. With the help of Rupert, Mina, and Ruby, Luke goes toe to toe with a vampire/bounty hunter/ guy with a funny thing on his nose by the name of Gladiolus Thrip. There are monsters, there are guns, and people dash about in a madcap sort of manner. Typical pilot episode fodder.
The verdict: It's a knock off and, like most knock offs, it isn't as good as the source material. A lot of the biggest criticisms have been talked about to death but, for the record, Philip Glenister's (Rupert Galvin) american accent could do with more than a bit of work. The show would be much better if they'd allowed him to use his proper accent.
The real problem so far is that, while Luke is interesting and well acted by Christian Cooke, the supporting cast is weak enough to make the whole show seem like a dodgy table with only one good leg. As much as we all love Buffy as a character, we wouldn't have stuck around for seven seasons without the Scoobies who backed her up. What "Demons" really needs is Willow and Xander and, at this point, Ruby and Mina are not cutting it.
Bottom Line: I'm going to watch it. Is it silly? Yes. Is it contrived? Little bit. Was Buffy much different during Season One? No.
It's a bit of fluff done in a genre and style for which I'm fond. Did I mention it's only six episodes? Yeah. Six. This Buffyfester says give the show a chance for an episode or two. The worst you'll have done is blown an hour and a half and, at best, you'll be mildly entertained.
If you're looking for something more substantial to fill your Buffy needs I'd recommend watching... well... I'll save that for another time, shall I? For now I'll leave you with a trailer for "Demons". Enjoy and don't forget to comment!

I couldn't resist. I went and designed a shirt inspired by the Yummy Sushi Pajamas just for you, Bitsy. Order it over-sized and wear it like a Night Shirt. Now Buffy will wish she was you instead of the other way around! Check the American Apparel kid's one too at our store.

An email amongst Buffyfesters

The Subject: I will tell you this
The Body: I want yummy sushi pajamas in a bad way but not 86 bucks bad. Seriously, wtf!?!? Just because Buffy wore them? Buffy is not the queen of high fashion over here. She only looks good because she's standing next to Xander the flannel king and muppet skinning Willow.
Conclusions: Why am I still thinking about yummy sushi pajamas? Joss? Anyone? Help?
Response: Bitsy, we don't need Joss to know that it's prolly because you secretly want to be Buffy. Ooh, they're a little on sale here. Check em out! Guess we know what to get you for your birthday! Love, Tee

Live Bloggin' Suburban Girl

Here's a film that might have slipped under your radar. It's a romantic comedy starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and... Alec Baldwin. I know, I know. The mere thought makes you want to flee towards the vomitorium. That's understandable and I, too, had to resist the urge to yammie in a handbag while partaking of this movie.
But worry not, gentle readers, for I have a plan. By some stroke of luck(?), Suburban Girl is available in it's entirety through YouTube as a ten part series.
Here's what we're going to do: below you will find the first part of the series. By watching the film in ten minute intervals I think we all stand a good chance of chewing back the need to chunder.
After the jump, you can see the comments I made while watching. I essentially live blogged it and, now, so can you! As you watch, jot down your snarkiest thoughts and then post them, comment stylee. Ready? Let's begin!
- Oh, good, a montage of... editing a manuscript...? This is like the beginning of Mallrats except, you know, *boring*
- Yes! You craftily sneak those books to the display window, Smidgers! That's way more exciting than, say, slaying vampires.... wtf...
- Why is her hair so mousy and frizzy? This is so not the way.
- And now they are doing straight up text cards where they show "interesting" words *exactly* like "Clerks". Did we edit this film in the middle of a Kevin Smith marathon, people?!?!
- Yes, why not use a pen? It's not like you're an editor and constantly need to check and double check to make sure all the syntax is correct or anything. Shut up, stereotypical taxi driver.
- They sure like the word 'totally', huh? Am I suddenly watching 'Valley Girls'?
- "Hi, I have a bloated face" - Alec Baldwin
- Oh this is a book nerd's movie. I didn't realize. Ah, Smidge, you always appeal to some kind of hopelessly, socially handicapped group. Housewives as Kendall, vampire enthusiasts as Buffy and now this Brett girl for bibliophiles.
- You know, there's nothing more romantic than a man telling a girl what she's going to eat. Not misogynistic at all. Nope.
- And here's the plucky, old, bitch face. Thanks for making an appearance, yet another stereotype.
Anyway, clearly Baldwin is meant to be the Big to Smidge's Carrie Bradshaw. The movie instantly loses points for it's attempt to be anything like Sex and the City. That's right. I hate Sex and the City. Deal with it.
That's all for part one! Stay tuned for more pukey Smaldwin shipping! *barf*
