Our List of Sarah Michelle Gellar's Top Comedy Moments

Personally, we've always thought Sarah Michelle Gellar's comedic timing was stellar and a much overlooked aspect of her thespian skills. So now with her new sitcom series with Robyn William "The Crazy Ones" premiering tonight on ABC, we've decided to compile our favorite SMG comedy moments!

#10 "Earshot" - The scene at the end when Buffy says as deadpan as can be "You know, if you're not too busy having sex with my mother" and poor Giles runs into the tree.

#9 "Pangs" - Buffy gets her panties all in a bunch over Giles not possessing a ricer. It's so funny that the slayer can be so anal retentive. (*note: what is NOT funny is Buffy's cowboy hat in the beginning. That's a gripe for another post.)

#8 "Him" - In general season seven's "Him" is kind of skeevy (spell-or-no-spell) what with Buffy seducing a student on her desk and all. But once it comes down to Buffy digging out the old rocket launcher and turning it on Principal Wood (forcing Spike to tackle her to the ground), you have to at least chuckle!

#7 "Superstar" - Pretty much all of "Superstar" is Buffy being a starwhore to Jonathan's celebrity. Couldn't have been easy!

#6 "Something Blue" - "Spike and I are getting married!" Both a hysterical performance and a Spuffy's dream!

#5 "Welcome to the Hellmouth" - Buffy tells a random vamp: "Live in the now, you look like De Barge" Hilarious 80's reference with given superb delivery. HA!

#4 "Beer Bad" - Many people love to hate on "BB" but between Buffy's tragic hair and stumbling around like the drunk, belligerent caveman that she is, I can't help but laugh every single time. This bit of dialogue between Xander and Buffy is my fave: "Is there a lesson to all this? What did we learn about beer?", "Foamy!", "Good, as long as that's clear."

#3 "Life Serial" - Struggling with that damn, cursed Mummy Hand. Comedy gold!

#2 "Goodbye Iowa" - The speech is amazing and goes like this:
Buffy: [serious] You guys research the Polgara demon. I want to know where it is. When I find it I'm going to make him pay for taking that kid's life, I'll make him die in ways he can't even imagine.
~beat~
Buffy: That probably would have sounded more commanding if I wasn't wearing my yummy sushi pajamas.

#1: And the number one moment is...

"Hush" - In an otherwise terrifying episode hides the legendary scene where Buffy is enthusiastically wanking off to prove her point. Miming masturbation? Enough said!

'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D' Premieres TONIGHT!

Alright, this is it! The moment you've all been waiting for. Debuting tonight is Joss Whedon's return to television (since Dollhouse's demise) with the Marvelverse's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

As a reader of Buffyfest, you probably know by now that the show picks up the story after the battle that leveled much of Manhattan in Whedon's film The AvengersHowever if you need a brush-up or aren't completely familiar with all the goings-on of the 7 feature films so far, IGN has an adorable timeline of the Marvel Universe as it pertains to AgentsAnd if you don't know this particular string of Marvel stories doesn't include Spidey or the X-men films, then you're really lost! WTF, go check that link out for sure.

The NY Times says about the premiere: "You’ll notice that the first episode is polished, fast-moving and at least moderately entertaining, which is no surprise, given that it was directed by the gifted storyteller Joss Whedon, who created the show along with Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen."

On the other coast, the LA Times surmised: "Hit films have spawned many television adaptations, some of which are successful ("MASH"), some less so ("Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles"). But there's never been a live-action series running not just concurrently with its franchise, but also in narrative sync. S.H.I.E.L.D. exists to keep things from getting to the point that the Avengers must be called in. A brand-expanding gambit, yes, but also a very clever concept."

Aww...RIP Sarah Connor Chron. Sad Face.

Also to all of our tweeps, do not forget that @Marvel is live tweeting the premiere tonight! 8pm!

Finally, Joss and co was also on the cover of Entertainment Weekly and the interview is now up on the interwebs in full. Click here to read it  before tonight's premiere!

Guns Don't Kill People...Joss Kills People.

I love this! So we were recently introduced to Once Upon a Tee, which is a website that offers weekly collections of limited tees for $12 based on theme. They've done a Star Wars collection, then Game of Thrones and now Joss Whedon, natch.

Their Whedon collection consists of eight super-cute designs from artists all over the world. Each unique and captures a different element of Joss and his work. I'm LOVING the "Guns don't kill people..." what with the Suessical font and Grr Argh Joss. Ha! But they really are all pretty fab. And 12 bucks! Can't beat that with a bat. The collection expires on Sept 16th, so if you're thinking of buying one get on that.

Check it and linkage:

Animal Crossing Town Tune: Redux!

We just found out that today is our 5 year anniversary on Twitter. Good times! I remember back then, I knew no one IRL that was on Twitter...they were the new kid social media on the block. But Michelle had just secured our very first interview (Kelly Armstrong - writer of the IDW Angel comics at the time) and so we decided to try some new ones out to spread the word. Twitter soon became our fave site for reaching out to the Buffyverse fandom and remains so to this day. Thanks for being born Twitter!

Another thing that was happening around that time was Bitsy and my addiction to Animal Crossing. We would sit there for hours giving the animals explicit catch phrases and we eventually put our heads together to create the custom town tune. We ended up with you guessed it...the Buffy theme song.

Recently, however, I received an email from someone playing the new Animal Crossing game "New Leaf". He was happy he found our recipe for the "Buffy" town tune but chided me for it as he found it "lacking." Haha! Oh internets. Anyway, it turns out he used our framework to make a better one and although that burns my ass...I kinda agree.

So without further ado, the new and improved Buffy Town Tune for Animal Crossing: New Leaf - created by Drguyks:

Felicia Day and Her Broski Play Retro Games.

OK, this is fantastic. I can't believe I have missed this up to now, but luckily our Bitsy has opened my eyes to this wonderment. Basically Felicia Day and her cute brother Ryon Day have created a mini web series called "Co-Optitude" - which in a nutshell is just them playing through the retro games that their parents never let them have as kids.

The amazing part that Bits pointed out is that this couldn't be more like me and my own brother Ryan. Although we were Sega kids and Felicia and her bro are doing Nintendo but whatevs. So much like us, from the criticizing banter to the screaming at the badness and the exhilaration of winning. Ha!

Check the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle" game below, it's hilarious. Or better yet just go ahead and subscribe to her whole channel "Geek and Sundry" if you haven't already. I've watched a few "Co-optitude" vids now now and won't be getting up until I've seen them all...work be damned.

Joss Whedon visits 'The Colbert Report'

In case you missed it,  Joss Whedon (outfitted in his now staple skinny jeans) visited The Colbert Report on Thursday to promote his film Much Ado About Nothing. He also chatted with Stephen Colbert about why he's "Joss" and not "Josh" or even "Joey" and of course a little Avengers 2 discussion (Spoiler: Tony Stark has an atomic ass - tell us something we don't know!) Fun stuff! Check out the clip below:

Joss WhedonWorld

While watching a commercial for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Theme Park a few months back, we wondered what our own fandom theme park would be like? What if there was a magical Orlandoian place named Joss WhedonWorld? Could you ride a coaster straight down the mouth of Hell there? Could you dance the night away at The Bronze? We asked our twitter followers for suggestions as to what other attractions could exist there and we received an immediate influx of ideas from across the twitterverse. Now that the Harry Potter Theme Park finally opened to much fanfare over the weekend, we felt it was time to unleash our map to the Joss WhedonWorld park on to the world. After all, why should those Potterheads get all the fun?

So without further ado, Buffyfest's and the people's proposal for Joss WhedonWorld:

If you were involved in that Twitter conversation, look for your name next to your suggested attraction and thanks for participating! Now, if we only had a bajillion dollars to make it happen...

Happy Birthday Neil Patrick Harris!

Neil Patrick Harris is having a great month! He killed it as host at the Tony Awards, he's been confirmed for his first appearance San Diego Comic Con (if you're attending don't mis the HIMYM panel) and today is his landmark 40th birthday. To celebrate, we have guest blogger Alex Smith of Cantmiss.tv praising the illustrious career of Neil. [mild spoiler warning for various NPH projects below]

And if you’re interested in a little NPH viewing marathon, our guest has summarized where you can watch NPH in movies and shows all week long, on TV and online below! Welcome Alex!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Neil Patrick Harris, being only human after all, is turning 40 today! We thought we’d celebrate by
watching as many of his shows, movies and appearances as we could possibly find (we’ve shared them with you below), but first, let’s take a look back at the fabulous life and career of an actor who’s been charming us since he was 16!

Neil Patrick Harris found success in acting early in life, having been cast in his first film, Clara's Heart in 1988 alongside Whoopi Goldberg. By the next year, NPH was spending lots of time in the television spotlight as well, portraying child prodigy Doogie Howser on Doogie Howser, M.D., which ran for four seasons and completed production in 1993. At the conclusion of the show's run, Neil Patrick Harris made guest starring roles on several popular television shows such as Murder She Wrote alongside longtime actress Angela Lansbury.

Neil Patrick Harris also enjoyed film success post-Doogie Howser, with roles in successful films as Undercover Brother, Starship Troopers, and the Harold and Kumar series.

His big breakthrough as an adult actor came when he was casted as the hilariously self-centered womanizer Barney Stinson on CBS' How I Met Your Mother. The show has been one of the most successful sitcoms on the air since 2005, and Harris' work on the show has garnered him multiple Emmy nominations as well as a significant cult following for both himself and Barney.

A surprisingly central figure in Neil Patrick Harris' career has been our man, director Joss Whedon. Whedon is of course best known for creating Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but Neil Patrick Harris and Whedon have worked together on multiple projects over the years, most notably on the Fox Network's hit television series Glee. On the Glee episode titled “Dream On”, Whedon used Neil Patrick Harris to portray the character of Bryan Ryan, an old rival to glee club organizer and director Will Schuester. Whedon has even been quoted as joking "I am so tired of that guy. Why do they always make me direct Neil?"

Joss Whedon and Neil Patrick Harris had previously worked together (prior to the Glee episode) on Whedon's Internet-based project, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. Joss Whedon tapped other parts of the talent pool he obtained during his Buffy days as well and cast actor Nathan Fillion with Neil Patrick Harris in the show, which was produced during the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America Strike.

Neil Patrick Harris is a cultural phenomenon not only because he is constantly in the public eye as a celebrity, but also because he has prominently come out as an openly gay actor. It turns out his real life persona is distinctively different from the role of Barney Stinson, the womanizer; in reality, NPH is a happy family man with longtime partner David Burtka, with whom he has two children through a surrogate.

Neil Patrick Harris doesn't take his celebrity or himself too seriously, as he proved recently with his appearance in A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas. In the film, his coming out as an opening gay man is jokingly portrayed as nothing more than a front for his Barney Stinson-ish womanizing, a ploy that allows him to get close to women without his romantic intentions being suspected. His partner, David Burtka, even gets in on the fun during the film, portraying Neil Patrick Harris' top secret drug dealer.

Happy 40th Birthday Neil!

Author Bio: Alex Smith is an experienced watcher of television and an entertainment writer. Like any red blooded American teenager in the late 90’s, he enjoyed countless hours of Buffy’s vampire slaying, and it was during this time that he became introduced to the generally awesome Neil Patrick Harris, who would later steal hours of his life thanks to How I Met Your Mother. He would like to thank the kind people at Buffyfest for allowing him to further explore this weird admiration in public. [Graphics courtesy of Cantmiss.tv).

And You Thought You Were A Fan...

Check out reader Whitney's brand-spankin' new and hard core Whedonverse tattoo depicting Angelus' narration from the episode "Passion" done in the Buffy font! It took five straight hours and runs from underarm to hip. Kind of reminds us of Dark Willow's skin when she's sucking the books for magic in "Villains", no? Anyway, how fabulous!

note: Whitney also has tats of the Buffy Season 8 Twilight symbol and Mutant Enemy monster. Like we've said before: Obsessed!

Thanks for sharing, Whitney!

Joss Whedon’s 2013 Wesleyan Commencement is Wonderful.

"You are all going to die", Joss Whedon says toward the beginning of his Commencement Address to the 181st Wesleyan University Graduates, where he also received an Honorary Doctorate this past Sunday. He continued, "You have all, in fact, already begun to die." I mean, how else would a Joss Whedon Commencement Address start? Luckily his speech got much deeper and more twisty and awesome, of course...eventually leading to the kick-ass: "To accept duality is to earn identity" and "the best thing is losing a debate. Because it means you’ve learned something and you’ve changed your position." Come on, now.

Definitely check out the video below of Joss in his cap and gown regalia and read the full transcript after the jump. [courtesy Tor.com]

“Two roads diverged in a wood and…” No! I’m not that lazy.

I sat through many graduations. When I was sitting where you guys [Wesleyan class of 2013] are sitting the speaker was Bill Cosby. He was very funny and he was very brief and I thank him for that. He gave us a message that I really took with me, and that a lot of us never forgot, about changing the world. He said, “You’re not gonna change the world, so don’t try.”

That was it! He didn’t buy that back at all. And then he complained about buying his daughter a car and then we left. And I remember thinking…you know I think I can do better. I think I can be a little more inspiring than that.

So, what I’d like to say to all of you is that you are all going to die.

Obscurus Lupa Presents: Beer Bad

You know, there is nothing I love more than when things I like collide. I've been waiting a long time for an excuse to promote anything at That Guy With The Glasses and, today, at long last, my excuse has finally come. Enter Allison Pregler aka Obscurus Lupa, one of the newest editions to the TGWTG team and her latest segment, Manic Episodes, where, you guessed it, she makes fun of the stranger episodes of the most popular genre shows. And what could make for better fodder than "Beer Bad", an episode that everyone thinks is absolutely ridiculous? Well, everyone, except for those Buffy/Parker and Oz/Veruca 'shippers out there (I know you weirdos must exist somewhere. This is the internet!)

Without any further prattling from me, here is Allison in her element, talking about all things foamy.

This was pretty hilarious and I'm really looking forward to seeing what episodes of Buffy/Angel/Firefly/Dollhouse(Oh, God, please make fun of Dollhouse) Allison might take on next. What episodes would you like to see her take to task?

Also, I really want Linkara to take on Buffy Season 8. Get to it, Lewis!
